Albert Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. But to get different results, we have to make a change.
We talk about wanting change and even make promises to ourselves. We say we are planning on doing something, but when it comes right down to it, we stay exactly where we started. The truth is, most people claim they are open-minded, but in reality, they are uncomfortable with change. They don’t want to have to do anything to get the different results. Making a change forces us to face our fear and insecurities, makes us feel guilty if we fail. Change requires us to accept the unknown and surrender to doubt associated with the change. What if we don’t like the change once we make the decision? (Cut our hair, move to a new city, change jobs) There is also the factor that we might not know how to make the change and get bogged down in the overwhelm. (That is also a more comfortable position because it just leaves us on the fence without having to face the results of our action.)
To make change happen, it helps if we recognize that change is a process, not an event. If we believe that generally change only happens when the pain of not changing is greater than the pain of the change itself, then we can truly examine our motives for change and make that final leap. Awareness is the first element to implement change and reprogram our settings. to Things that help to bring about change? Don’t make it bigger than it needs to be. Take small steps, but make them specific. Start with reframing or changing your view about what the change means. Know your why for wanting the change. And start. Take one step, and then another and then another. And before you know it, painlessly, CHANGE will happen. And if you don’t like it, CHANGE.
